The Kelowna Chapter of the Association of Canadian Travellers (ACT) initiated construction of the Little Travellers’ Safety Village at the KDSC site in the spring of 1980, and the Village officially opened to the public on June 7th of that year. ACT funded the planning and construction of the Village, and arranged for the voluntary labour necessary to complete the project. The City of Kelowna provided the land, landscaping, utilities, and pavement, and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia provided the original 15 miniature pedal cars. Responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the Little Travellers’ Safety Village was handed over to the Kelowna and District Safety Council shortly after the Village’s completion. Over the years, corporate support, donations, and grants have helped to sustain the Village that has been a favorite field trip destination for over 68,000 children in the local school districts. With help from the BC Safety Council, KDSC started a Motorcycle Training Program in 1982. Since that time, KDSC Instructors have helped over 2000 students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become safe motorcyclists. Our Motorcycle Training Facility is licensed under the BC Motor Vehicle Act and adheres to the standards of ICBC, the British Columbia Safety Council, and the Canada Safety Council. In addition to Beginner and Advanced Rider courses, KDSC also offers some hands-on specialty courses such as Motorcycle Winterization and Mechanics. Throughout the years, KDSC has also offered Defensive Driving and 55 Alive courses for seniors, and is now offering Defensive Driving Online courses as well. The Board and Management of the Kelowna and District Safety Council are committed to strengthening and expanding existing safety programs, and to creating and offering new programs as the needs of the community change. |
